What is Reiki?

Reiki is an energy healing system which channels universal life energy into the body by a gentle placing of the hands in specific positions on the body.

Where does Reiki come from?

Dr. Mikao Usui [1865-1926] developed Reiki, towards the end of the 19th Century. Dr. Usui was a Japanese philosopher who searched for understanding of how the great teachers of the main world religions had been able to heal. He spent many years searching and had many disappointments until, after a long period of fasting, he was given understanding about healing. He first used Reiki on himself and then tried it out on his own family. Following personal success, he opened a clinic in 1922 for healing and ran workshops to share his knowledge. He died of a stroke in 1926 aged 62. Dr. Usui's students carried on his work.

Reiki in the west today comes, almost entirely, from the teaching of Mrs Takata who was taught by Dr. Hayashi, who was one of Dr. Usui's students.

How do you say Reiki?

The word Reiki, pronounced 'ray-key', is written as a Japanese kanji which has two parts. The top part is 'Rei' meaning universal or spiritual and the lower part 'Ki' meaning energy or power. Literally, Reiki means 'universal energy' or 'spiritual power'.

How does Reiki work?

The universe and all beings in are made of energy. When we are unwell or stressed, we are full of dis-ease i.e. unbalanced. By channelling energy from the universe into a client by placing the hands over the energy centres in the body, I will aim to bring balance to your body and emotions.

Where are the energy centres?

These are the chakras and the main ones are the crown of the head, the forehead, the throat, the heart, the solar plexus, the stomach and the hips area.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing. Shoes should be removed.

What does a Reiki session involve?

Before the session begins, I will explain the hand positions to you, since most of your body or your field of energy will be touched. Hands are placed with respect not to violate and individual's body privacy. Modifications can always be made to the traditional hand positions to respect any additional touch issues you may have. The receiver will often feel warmth, tingling, or both where the practitioner's hands are placed. My hands will touch you gently  and will usually be motionless, except when changing positions; there is no massage or body manipulation. You may be seated or lying on a couch. You will be asked to close your eyes and relax.

How long is a Reiki session?

A Reiki session lasts approximately 60 minutes; depending on your needs, so, you will want to allow time in your schedule to insure a comfortable transition from the Reiki experience back to your normal state of being. Typically, you'll emerge from a Reiki treatment feeling deeply relaxed, with a sense of well being and inner peace.
